Route 66: A Photo Journal and Exhibit

First you drive the ultimate road trip from Los Angeles to Chicago on Route 66 taking 1,100 35 mm photographs along the way. This is done in 8 days in late February, 2002. Four years later the 4 x 6 prints are removed from the envelopes and I view them for only the second time sparking an idea to do a Route 66 photo exhibit.

166 of the 1,100 photos are enlarged to 20” x 30” and are displayed in Reno, Nevada during Hot August Nights in 2006. I was surprised by the interest it drew. After two years of public displays and museum hopping, the photographs “Route 66: A Photo Journal” have been exhibited in an 1890 Firehouse in Pontiac, Illinois. The building is also the home of the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame Museum.
By the end of 2008, “Route 66: A Photo Journal” was published as a coffee table book featuring the same photos from the exhibit. I would become the sole distributor of that book.
In the years to follow many contacts were made at retail establishments looking for buyers of my book. I began to sell them Route 66 themed apparel sewn by my wife, Sue.
Unfortunately for potential buyers east of Albuquerque, thanks to the good taste of Vicki at the Enchanted Trails RV Park, not many items made it past there.

Between 2013 and 2015 a series of posters designed by Jesse Gifford, using my photographs, were produced. Once again I would become the sole distributor.

Then in 2015, after 74 road trips in 10 years, the journeys ended as quickly as they had started. There would be one more trip in 2017 to meet with some travelers from Finland and to sell a few posters. After 375,450 miles and 1,060 days on the road – the adventures ended.
